Indeed's Head of HR: Why diversity is self-defeating

Paul Wolfe, Head of Global HR at job site Indeed, explains why the concept of diversity is self-defeating, how he dealt with all-white male candidate shortlist and why inclusion should be firms’ next priority…

Why, in your opinion, is ‘diversity’ self-defeating?

To me, diversity is a subset of inclusion. But there’s a challenge in inclusivity as all humans are all born with unconscious bias. Everyone is bought up to view life through a certain perspective. Whilst it’s great that we all see things differently, it’s also a challenge when it comes to inclusion. It’s a tough problem as it’s intrinsic to how human brains are hardwired.

However, employers need to make it their goal to create an inclusive work environment for all employees no matter who they are, what they think etc. And this conversation isn’t going to go away, the debate is only getting louder and we have a duty to try to get better.
