HRD at Unum UK: Why are too few young men talking about mental health?

Employers are investing in the health and wellbeing of their workforce more than ever before.

However, new data from Unum UK group income protection reveals young male employees aren’t seeking as much mental health support at work compared to women, which suggests gender differences should be accounted for when dealing with mental wellbeing at work.

That's according to Liz Walker, HR Director at Unum UK, who spoke to HR Grapevine about how too few young men are talking about mental health.

"Of total mental health claims, only 7 per cent were made by men under 30, compared to 12%  for women in the same age group," she explains. "The disclosure gap doubles between age 30 and 40, with only 14% of mental health claims coming from men, compared with 30% from women."
