 1. New employee claims he has a life-threatening condition and can’t come into work

Calling in sick isn’t exactly a new excuse for failing to come to work but, usually, the reason for failing to turn up for the day isn’t deathly serious – and isn’t so easily verifiable because said employee lives across the road from where he works.

However, this is what happened when a new store assistant phoned in sick, claiming he’d suffered a stroke. Fortunately, the manager, and other staff, were able to watch as said ‘sick’ employee packed up his car with beach gear, and drove off with his girlfriend. Needless to say, he wasn’t employed for much longer.
