The American drama film starring Casey Affleck, who plays the role of a janitor, wakes up one day to find his brother has passed away. Driven out of his home by the tragedy, and the realisation that he’s been named as the guardian for his nephew, the plot is laden with heartbreak and grief.   

No one is prepared for death and the sadness it plagues us with – not even HR. Almost half (45%) of HR departments do not have agreed policies in place to cope with the aftermath of the death of an employee, and 64% do not have procedures for supporting staff who are diagnosed with a terminal illness, according to research from MetLife Employee Benefits.

Tom Gaynor, Employee Benefits Director at MetLife UK, comments: “Bereavement is sadly something which will affect most employees and companies need to have agreed procedures in place to ensure staff and their families have support when they need it.
