Diageo's Head of Talent Engagement: 3 ways HR can stay ahead

2. Insight

“Analytics and insight is another really big piece,” says Porter. “As an organisation, we are in possession of a lot of data. We’re very good at representing data but data is what has already run you over.”

He explains that data is often historical and is then used as a reference for lesson-learning. But actually data should be used in the same way Marketing uses it; “to give insights, visions and a view of the future.  We have to get better and sharpen-up, both organisationally and functionally, around how we use data and insights to then be able to be a true partner to the business.”

3. Adaptability

The most important thing to realise about change is that it needs to be embraced and “just being prepared to do things differently,” says Porter.  He continues: “If I think back to when I started to work, how we work today is just so fundamentally different. Some of this change is being driven by the digital revolution but part is being influenced by the megatrends that are going on in the outside world.”
This goes beyond different generations coming in to the workforce and adapting to them. Porter believes “we talk about Millennials, and the way they want to work, and what they want but I think, more importantly, there’s a piece about people adopting a Millennial “mindset”, as opposed to Millennials per se.” In other words, it’s not just the young that are working differently, every generation is impacted due to the new world we live in.
