The City firm recruiting an 'emoji specialist'

A multitude of new jobs have been predicted for the future, but did anyone expect ‘emoji specialist’ to be an occupation? Well it is.

A London firm, based in the City’s financial district, is currently advertising for an Emoji Specialist/Translator.

“Emoji translation is itself an emerging field – but one dominated to date by software, which is often insensitive to the many cultural differences in usage and interpretation. We are therefore seeking an exceptional individual to provide the human touch needed where translation software is inadequate – and to help us become the go-to translation experts in this area,” reads the job advert from Today Translations, the translation and interpreting services provider.

However, this is not a language that has ‘native speakers’ nor is it a job that has individuals with prior experience. And so the firm is looking for someone that is “able to demonstrate a passion for emojis, combined with cutting-edge knowledge and awareness of areas of confusion and cultural/international differences.”

The desirable, but not essential, skills required include; a degree in translation (or three years’ experience in the language industry), a commitment to delivering excellence  and excellent communication, relationship-building and organisational skills.

The location is “flexible” and the salary is “competitive”, with selected candidates being invited to take an Emoji Translation Test.

The first part of the test is an Emoji-to-English translation where individuals have to translate the following emoji phrases or sentences into English…
