'Tis the season to review your HR strategy

With the Christmas period and the end of the year fast approaching, now is the time that many businesses will begin reviewing their HR strategies and policies.

The Christmas holidays mark a time when employees are reflecting on their achievements this year and where they want their careers to go. It’s no coincidence that there’s a marked increase in the number of people handing in their notice in the first quarter of the year, says Keith Herman, Managing Director of Inspire.

He spoke to us about why it’s important to re-think HR strategies ahead of the new year. He explains: “A successful retention strategy needs to be realistic – you’re going to lose some people over the next 12 months, with a fraction of those moving onto pastures new in search of a promotion, different challenges or simply a change of scene.

“While a proportion of that churn is to be expected, it’s worth reviewing your current strategy to ascertain what could be offset to prevent people leaving because they feel undervalued or not challenged enough. So, you can start letting your staff know how valued they are by investing in a reward and recognition scheme.
