"Significant ageism" in the workplace still exists, with staff, older women in particular, facing barriers to promotion and training - according to a report published last year, titled 'A New Vision for Older Workers: Retain, Retrain, Recruit'.
The report also found that over 50s staying in the workforce creates more jobs for younger people and betters the economy.
A separate report, titled ‘Age in the Workplace’, conducted by Business in the Community, found that between 2012 and 2022, an estimated 12.5 million jobs will be created from people leaving the workforce – meaning an additional 2 million jobs will be left open.
With the impending skills shortage worrying Britain at present, businesses need to implement strategies to retain and upskill their workforce.
