3. Catch Me If You Can (2002)
This may be a tale of cat and mouse in most people’s eyes, but it is one that can actually be translated in to a tale of mergers and acquisitions.
Consider the FBI as one organisation and Frank Abagnale (Leonardo DiCaprio) as another organisation. Frank is a challenger, he is a threat and he regularly causes problems for the less agile FBI. So for years the two waste time and energy competing, until eventually Frank is caught and imprisoned.
But regardless of which side you look at in this scenario, the peak of both of their success is actually when they work together – when they merge. When Frank joins the FBI, they catch many of the world’s most elusive money forgers thanks to his expertise, while he ends up earning millions of dollars. It becomes a win-win scenario.
And so, in some instances it is better for businesses to consider partnering, or merging, with those that are deemed threats. The big Tech companies are renowned for having this mentality, but there is no reason other sectors can’t adopt a similar strategy.
