Why do UK offices need a European makeover?

British offices are the coldest and ugliest in the world – according to a recent survey by Ipsos and Steelcase.

After polling 12,000 employees, the research found that almost three in 10 of those asked complained that their workspace was “impersonal”, higher than the worldwide average of just 18%.

Kenneth Freeman, Head of Innovation at office design firm Ambius, believes that this is something that could easily be improved upon – and explained to us why productivity and retention are hanging in the balance.

“The Danish philosophy of ‘hygge’ (pronounced ‘HUE-gah’) is a state of mind that embraces ‘cosiness’ and comfort,” explained Freeman. “Instilling this concept into our workspaces through the use of greenery, could be the natural solution to delivering some cosiness to our cold, sterile offices, and could help improve employee engagement.”
