How to Build an Effective Careers Page

A careers page is a great candidate attraction tool.

Not to be confused with a careers site (a separate micro-site that acts as the candidate-facing part of your applicant tracking system), a careers page is simply a section of your website that’s dedicated to promoting yourself as an employer.

If you don’t already have a careers page on your website, you should seriously consider including one. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy but it’s a really effective way of showcasing your vacancies and your employer brand.

As such, we’ve put together a few tips on what content you should be including on your careers page to attract candidates. These tips are useful if you’re building your careers page from scratch or simply looking for ideas to help you improve the content of your existing page.

Include a list of your current vacancies

It might sound obvious but make sure that your careers page is kept updated with your latest roles.

List your vacancies with a short description of the role and details of how jobseekers can apply. If you’re currently using an applicant tracking system, simply place an apply link beneath the vacancy that routes candidates through your application process. Alternatively, you could instruct candidates to send their CVs to a specific email address.

Even if you don’t have any open vacancies at present, it’s worth popping details of where prospective candidates can send their CVs; this will allow you to build a talent pool of suitable candidates for any future roles.

Benefits and perks

When listing your vacancies, make sure that you include details of any role-specific perks, as well as general company benefits.

For example, if the trainee role you’re advertising includes financial support to help the candidate achieve future qualifications, make this clear on your careers page.

Additionally, make sure that you include general benefits that apply to all employees, including pension schemes, lifestyle benefits and holiday allowance.

Company information

It’s important to offer company information on your careers page but try to focus on what you offer as an employer, rather than what you offer your customers as a business.

Talk about your environment, culture and values. Are your offices spacious and ideally located? Are you passionate about developing and growing the abilities of your staff? Or maybe you have a company mantra that all your existing employees live and breathe by.

These are all perfect things to include within your careers page – try to keep details about your product offering and history within your ‘About Us’ section.

Photos

You’ve described what you’re like as an employer, now it’s time to show it. Take some photos of the team, your beautiful offices and any company socials and events.

Images can provide real insight into what it’s like to work for your business; they give your page a dose of life and personality, showing that there are actual people behind the words on your website.

Photos can also be helpful to candidates as they show snippets of life in your company, such as what your dress code is, what events you’re involved in and the size of your team.

Employee quotations

Think of your existing employees as ambassadors of your business. It’s a great idea to include quotations or mini interviews with members of your team on your careers page as this provides real, first-hand insight into what you’re like as an employer.

If possible, include photographs of each team member next to their testimonials so prospective candidates can put a face to a name.
