Not so many years ago a strictly enforced dress code was the norm for many companies. But with many businesses relaxing it, or even rescinding it completely, new challenges have been presented to those keeping one in place.
Susanna Frost, HR Director Europe, OSI Food Solutions and OSI Convenience Europe explains that nowadays, what staff wear should be reflective of both their job role and the customers they serve. “Formality has changed in the last few years and formality today is often “smart” instead of suits and ties. Customers need to see staff employed in companies as professional so the amount of time employees spend in front of clients really counts in agreeing a dress code. That code also needs to reflect the customer’s dress code so that they are comfortable”. Gemma Tumelty, Director, HR Dept, agrees: “Involving the team in drawing up the policy will help with compliance. The code has to be relevant to the client base and take into account health and safety needs.”
