The hotly anticipated shared parental leave regime is almost upon us, with couples expecting a baby from 5 April this year onwards potentially eligible to benefit. Nick Clegg has described it as “good for families, good for business and good for our economy”, whilst the Institute of Directors forecast that it would be a “nightmare” for business. But what is shared parental leave (SPL), and what does it mean for employers and employees?
