Employer-led? | Gallup report sees uneven growth in workplace AI use

AI microchip with glowing circuits

The share of US employees who say they use artificial intelligence at work at least a few times a year rose from 40% to 45% between the second and third quarters of 2025, according to new Gallup Workforce results.

Frequent AI use, defined as a few times a week or more, increased from 19% to 23% over the same period. Daily use edged up more modestly, moving from 8% to 10% of employees.

The findings are based on a nationally representative survey of 23,068 US adults employed full- and part-time, conducted online through the Gallup Panel.

AI use remained most prevalent in knowledge-based roles. Some 76% of employees in technology or information systems reported using AI at least a few times a year, compared with 58% in finance and 57% in professional services. Usage was notably lower in industries with larger frontline workforces, including retail at 33%, healthcare at 37% and manufacturing at 38%.

Workforce split on organizational AI adoption

While employee use has grown, awareness of employer-led AI adoption remains uneven. In the third quarter of 2025, 37% of employees said their organization had implemented AI to improve productivity, efficiency or quality. Some 40% said their organization had not, while 23% said they did not know.

That uncertainty was most pronounced among employees further removed from decision-making. Individual contributors were more likely than managers and leaders to say they did not know whether AI had been implemented, at 26%, compared with 16% of managers and 7% of leaders. Part-time workers, onsite employees and those in frontline roles also reported higher levels of uncertainty.

Gallup said that earlier surveys did not include a “don’t know” option, which encouraged respondents to guess. Under that earlier format, the share of employees who believed their organization had implemented AI rose from 33% in May 2024 to 44% in May 2025. The addition of a neutral response option in the latest survey makes those earlier figures not directly comparable.

How employees are using AI at work

Among employees who used AI at least annually, the most common applications were consolidating information at 42% and generating ideas at 41%. Some 36% reported using AI to learn new things. These patterns were consistent with Gallup’s initial measurements in 2024.

Chatbots and virtual assistants were the most widely used tools, reported by more than six in 10 AI users. Writing and editing tools followed at 36%, while 14% used AI coding assistants.

More advanced tools remained less common overall but were more prevalent among frequent AI users. The largest gaps were seen in coding assistants, used by 22% of frequent users compared with 8% of less frequent users, and data science or analytics tools at 18% versus 8%.

The report said broader employee adoption of AI is closely linked to managerial support and clear integration of AI into employees’ roles.
