HR cuts | People Managers among hundreds of roles being axed at Morrisons

Morrisons has become the second supermarket in less than a week to announce a major round of job cuts, with people manager roles high among those at risk of redundancy.

The retail giant has confirmed plans to reduce the headcount of its retail people team by more than 200 roles. The news comes just days after Sainsbury's announced a wave of 3,000 job cuts.

While Sainsbury's job cuts are broader in terms of the roles affected, Morrisons is specifically looking to reduce the number of roles in people management - with employee engagement, recruitment and payroll also reportedly impacted. Instead, a “central HR” team will be introduced to fill in the HR gaps. 

The supermarket’s chief executive Rami Baitiéh recently spoke of an “avalanche of costs” businesses will face after the government’s Budget in October.
