Musculoskeletal (MSK) pain is one of the largest hidden drivers of productivity loss and health costs in the workplace.
But new data from Vitrue Health’s latest research shows that not everyone in the workforce experiences MSK risk in the same way.
Based on a sample of 20,000+ workplace assessments across desk-based employees, this report reveals important patterns in how MSK pain shows up across different employee groups.
Key insights from the research:
Women report 35-40% higher pain severity than men, particularly in the neck, shoulders and mid-back area
Around 60% of employees under 30 years-old report pain, despite having fewer diagnosed conditions
Employees with multiple health conditions report more than double the pain levels of those with none
Younger workers are 2–3× more likely to report productivity impact from pain compared with older colleagues
For HR, reward and wellbeing leaders, the message is clear: a one-size-fits-all approach to workplace health often misses the employees who need the most support.
This report explores what these patterns mean for organisations, where MSK risk is most concentrated, and which groups may benefit most from earlier intervention and targeted support.
