Junior doctors could soon be earning less than employees at McDonald's, if a new contract is passed which determines a huge pay cut.
An NHS proposal could mean that the young medics will suffer a 30% wage decrease, putting them in the same pay bracket as a McDonald’s manager. The bill will also recommend that their normal working hours are extended to 7am to 10pm between Monday to Saturday, which means that all bonuses and overtime for working unsociable hours will be lost.
Unsurprisingly, junior doctors have reacted with outrage, directed mainly as Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt, with many claiming the move will have a “devastating blow” on the already low NHS morale. Rachel Owusu-Ankomah, a third year trainee surgeon, explained her disgust in an interview with The Tab. She said: “I think it’s really disappointing.
“One of my friends put it very eloquently, Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt – can you not afford to pay my wage or am I not worth my wage? I spent nine years at university accruing debt and I absolutely love my job – I couldn’t imagine doing anything else. But that’s not seeming to be appreciated by the government.
