'Demographic time bomb' to create future skill shortage in engineering

As the baby-boomers gets ready for retirement, Britain’s engineering sector is heading towards a “demographic time bomb”, Hay Group warns.

The management consulting firm has released a report named The Gathering Storm. The report shows that while the engineering sector is booming, the ageing workforce and the technological advancements are set to create a future skills shortage in the sector.

“There is a demographic time bomb ahead,” Paul Lambert, Associate Director at Hay Group, tells Recruitment Grapevine.

Leaders at more than 100 UK-based engineering firms were interviewed for the report. 61% of the surveyed leaders said their companies will face the challenge of an ageing workforce in the next five years.
