Oliver Twist fate for unions if Tory plans succeed

The Conservative party plans to make strikes illegal unless half of union members take part in a ballot, leaving union members “with about as much power as Oliver Twist”, warns the TUC leader.

After the next general election, the Conservatives intend to impose a policy which will state that strikes will be illegal unless at least 50% of balloted participants of a union cast a vote.

General Secretary of the TUC, Frances O’Grady, labelled the Conservatives' plans as “anti-democratic”, the party defended their intentions by stating “militant” union leaders should not demand strikes without majority backing by members.
