Significantly increased risk of diabetes for shift workers

Shift workers face an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes according to a study published in Occupational and Environmental Medicine.

The findings report that men and those who work rotating hours, such as hospital staff and highways operatives, have a greater threat of contracting the disease due to the possible hormonal imbalances, sleep deprivation and unusual eating times that working shifts can produce.

Researchers at Huazhong University of Science and Technology in China conducted the study which showed shift workers were 9% more likely to have type 2 diabetes.
