Supporting well-being keeps staff 'resilient and productive for longer'

Employers need to adapt and re-train workers as they progress throughout the world of work, says CIPD’s Head of Public Policy.

Ben Willmott, the CIPD’s Head of Public Policy, wrote a report last month urging organisations to plan ahead and avoid a mass skills exodus further down the line: “Employers can help ensure older workers can pass on their skills in the run up to their retirement through involving them in training, coaching and mentoring activities.”

His report highlighted a 64% drop in employment rates between the ages of 53 and 67. It also estimated that the UK will struggle to fill one million jobs by 2030 unless improvements are made.

“Employers also need to think about the changing skill development needs of workers as they get older, if they want to be seen as an employer of choice and retain key staff,” said Willmott, speaking to HR Grapevine.
