Why preventative health should be your next benefits priority

Most benefits strategies are built to respond to ill health, not prevent it. That's an expensive habit! Employees are often well into a health issue before they access support, by which point absence, presenteeism, and treatment costs have already climbed. Preventative health flips that model: it catches risk early, keeps people well for longer, and costs a fraction of reactive care.

For HR and benefits leaders under pressure to do more with flat budgets, that makes prevention one of the highest-return investments available. According to Deloitte research, the UK has the potential to unlock £8 in socio-economic returns for every £1 spent on preventive healthcare, and that pattern holds across the specialist areas where early support changes outcomes most.

The cost of waiting

Ill health doesn't often arrive without warning. Conditions like cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and burnout typically develop gradually, with risk factors visible months or sometimes years before a diagnosis. Yet most workplace health support is triggered only once someone is already struggling - through sickness absence, an EAP call, or an insurance claim.

By that stage, options are more limited and more expensive. Early intervention, by contrast, can prevent a short-term issue from becoming a long-term one - for the employee's health and for the organisation's bottom line.
