'Meltdown Monday': train changes spark commuter chaos

Thousands of rail commuters have been hit by delays, cancellations and confusion as a brand new timetable is introduced this morning for those in the south east of England and the North.

The key change, according to the Independent, is that trains from across the south east will be funnelled through a central core between London Blackfriars and St Pancras International.

Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) explained that the intention is to improve the service they offer. "We are implementing over the coming weeks the biggest timetable change in a generation to boost capacity and improve reliability, introducing 400 extra daily trains and space for 50,000 extra passengers in the peak,” a spokesperson explained.

"Due to the scale and complexity of the task, these changes will be made incrementally.”
