A lot of our lives are spent at work. With the elision of the personal and professional spheres, with the advent of technology pushing us towards an always-on culture, it can sometimes feel as if your job is your life.
This means that people who we work with, or next to, become an important factor in our workplace wellbeing: we share laughs with them; share stress with them; and some become our closest friends.
This is why Dan Buettner, National Geographic Explorer, explained to Business Insider that having a workplace ally is crucial.
He said: “It usually involves putting yourself out there, thrusting out your hand to somebody you don't know, inviting them to lunch, doing a happy hour with them. You want to get to the point where your conversation transcends the usual just commercial back-and-forth of work or talking about sports score.”
