The Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) has been accused of paying staff in India ‘slave wages’ of £1.19 an hour.
A probe by the Daily Record coincides with news that the bank plans to close 62 branches in England and Wales - a move which puts hundreds of jobs in the UK at risk.
According to the report, graduate staff in Chennai, South India, are being paid just £200 a month, a rate which equates to just £1.19 an hour.
A recent RBS recruitment drive in the region for “customer tags operation” positions offering a salary of 246,000 rupees worked out at just £2,700 a year. The average Chennai salary is around £5,000.
