Weetabix's HRD: Why gender pay gap always matters

With just a few hours before the gender pay gap reporting deadline is up, many organisations with significant disparities will be facing scrutiny from their staff, the Government and the media.

Whilst the reporting is positive, in that it provides a vehicle for change, it raises questions – why must equal pay be the result of a crackdown? Surely firms are aware of their responsibility to pay staff equally, regardless of gender?

Fortunately, there are some companies who have always prioritised equality – even when no one is watching. One of these firms, is Weetabix. In 2016-17, the organisation reported a 3.4% pay gap in - far lower than the average of 18.1%. However their Group HR and IT Director, Stuart Branch still isn’t satisfied.

He tells us: “There’s still more for us to do. However, you’ll see from the report that there was a positive closing in the gap. We’ve closed it by 3.7% over the past year and in the last few years we have been working on addressing any unconscious biases.”
