Should cake be BANNED from the office?

Who doesn’t love celebrating their colleague’s birthday with a slice of cake? Whether it is bought in secret following a cheeky whip-round, or lovingly made at home by the employee themselves, each workplace has their own rules around how cake is provided during celebrations.

However, in new guidance, Public Health England said those who wanted to buy or make a colleague a cake on their birthday should look for ‘healthier alternatives’.

The advice, produced in conjunction with Business in the Community, asks if ‘cake days’ be shared, or if healthier alternatives be provided.

“Just think about how hard it can be to resist the daily doughnut tray or the celebration cake in the office if you’re trying to make healthier choices with what you eat,” said Dr Justin Varney, National Lead for Adult Health and Wellbeing at Public Health England.
