Today marks National Wheelchair Day, which aims to raise awareness of the positive impact that a wheelchair can have on the lives of users.
Yet, there still remains confusion about how workplaces can accommodate individuals who rely on a wheelchair to get around.
Whilst the Government has vowed to help one million disabled people into work over the next decade, making the workplace an accessible space needs to fall under employers’ duty of care.
Speaking to HR Grapevine, Christine Husbands, Managing Director at RedArc, believes that this duty needs to transgress beyond physical adjustments. “When we think about catering for those with disabilities in the workplace, we tend to think of making for people with visible impairments such as mobility and other physical issues,” she says.
