Lying candidate won £84,000 salary - and a conviction

A job candidate who compiled a CV of lies to land a £84,000-a-year job is due to be sentenced today. For recruiters, the case highlights the importance of doing thorough due diligence and background checks on the hires they're putting forward.

The case centres around Sudip Sarker. Last week, the ex-consultant was convicted of fraud at Worcester Crown Court after claiming, on his CV, that he had performed over fifty specialist surgeries. The true figure was no more than six – Metro reports.

Sarker's lies landed him the role of specialist colorectal surgeon at Alexandra Hospital in Redditch. The salary band for the role was advertised at between £74,000 and £100,000.

Sarker denied lying to get the role, saying he had taken a ‘guesstimate’ at how many procedures he had carried out.
