The most expensive UK cities to live and work in

The UK has a shocking North South divide when it comes to salary and rent, according to analysis from CV Library, suggesting workers could get a better deal by looking for roles in cheaper locations.

Londoners pay a staggering 37.1% of their monthly salary on living costs, versus those in Hull who spend just 11.6%. This means workers could save a considerable amount of their wages by working somewhere with a better rent-to-salary ratio, such as Liverpool instead of Manchester, or Glasgow instead of Edinburgh.

The findings compared average asking rents across the UK, with monthly take home pay in these cities. It found that despite London offering some of the highest salaries in the UK, workers in the Capital and Brighton are far worse off than those living in the likes of Hull, Liverpool, Sheffield and Newcastle, where lower asking rents leave workers with higher disposable income.

Only one city in the top five was in the North of the country – Edinburgh, where workers can expect to spend 23.32% of their wages on rent.
