Mums more likely to be in work than childless men

Mothers are now more likely to be in paid work than childless men according to new data from the Office of National Statistics (ONS).

Figures have highlighted that the number of stay-at-home mums has also fallen to a new record low, showing that 73.7% of mothers with dependent children are in careers, compared to 73.5% of childless men - The Telegraph explains.

"When a child is under one, the majority of mothers report that they are in full-time employment (many are likely to be on maternity leave at this point),” the report claims. “However, this changes when the youngest dependent child is between one and 12 years old – the majority of mothers with children in this age range report that they are working part-time.”

Analysis showed that mothers who have younger children were more likely to go back to work today than they were 20 years ago. One in three mums now work full-time, with 38% of them professing to work part-time. The improvement and expansion of childcare was cited as one of the main reasons why there was this surge in working mothers – undoubtedly spurred on by perks and benefits such as childcare vouchers and flexible working.
