The hidden skills crisis hitting HR hard

With the pace of workplace change moving faster than the average network rail service, UK professionals might be stuck in severe delays when it comes to their skills.

New research from ILM reveals that almost two thirds (62%) of UK professionals say they are not “very well equipped” to do their job. Even more workers (69%) feel unprepared for the changing workplace, believing they will need to acquire new skills in order to do their job in the next two to five years.

Despite this, the vast majority of UK professionals are being held back by a lack of focus and investment from their employers. Less than a quarter (24%) of employees feel “very supported” by their organisation when it comes to learning new skills or attending training.

But, what skills are most pressing amongst UK workforces? 17% say IT/digital literacy is a priority, followed by project management (15%) and negotiation, persuasion and resilience (14%) – and over half (59%) would prefer to learn these skills on the job.
