What does HR need to know about changes to data transfers across member states?

HR data encompasses vast amounts of personal information, and with imminent changes to Data Protection laws, under the new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) firms need to be aware of the implications of transferring this data across the EU. A breach of the regulation can result in a hefty fine - four per cent or two per cent of annual global turnover (depending on the fine band). Or, be hit with a €20million cost.

However, before the UK departs from the EU, there needs to be an agreement on the transfer of data across states. The UK Government has produced a paper, titled ‘the exchange and protection of personal data’ outlining their position on how Britain and the EU can approach the issue of transfer of UK-EU data post-Brexit.
