Wayne Rooney debacle: How should bosses react to an out-of-hours scandal?

Wayne Rooney's latest PR disaster saw him charged with drink driving and allegations of impropriety with a woman whilst his wife was away on holiday.

Whilst the debacle has nothing to do with his footballing career, it’s likely to impact his day job at Everton. Rooney was charged by officers and released on bail, and is set for terse talks with his boss, Ronald Koeman, who has already raised concerns about his drinking habits.

The Mirror reports that Rooney could be fined £320,000, and the scandal could remove him from the transfer list, should he step out of line again.

However, how should employers go about dealing with an out-of-hours scandal that has personal implications? With divorce rumours fleeting across the tabloids, CEO of Health Assured and wellbeing expert, David Price, believes employers should acknowledge the role they can play in assisting their employees through the upheaval of their personal problems.
