£2m RECORD payout for thousands of underpaid workers

Workers who were left out of pocket by their employers after being underpaid, are set to be refunded a record amount of £2million, the BBC reports.

According to a Government campaign, 230 employers have failed to pay the National Minimum Wage, effectively breaking the law. The issue is thought to have affected thousands of employees, 13,000 of whom will be receiving compensation for their loss of pay.

According to the list, Argos was allegedly amongst the worst offenders, having failed to pay 37,000 workers an average of £64 per head. The retailer was handed the largest fine of £800,000, after it emerged that employees were required to attend pre-shift briefings that they were never reimbursed for.

Speaking on the issue, John Rogers, Chief Executive of Argos, said: "I am pleased to say the issue was resolved quickly, and processes have been updated to ensure this cannot happen again.”
