A Google software engineer’s manifesto, defending the lack of women in tech and leadership roles, has left some staff “shaking in anger” and forced the software giant to defend its less-than-perfect equality record.
The ten-page document outlines why the engineer believes that female staffers do not rise through the ranks. Google had to send out a company-wide memo saying it did not represent the company’s views.
The document argues that men have a higher drive for status, that women might not like coding because they have more interest in “people and aesthetics” and that lower numbers of women take high stress jobs because of their “neuroticism”.
With the document, initially circulated internally then being leaked to the press, causing outrage across the company, Google’s hierarchy has been forced into action.
