It’s easy – and, quite frankly, lazy – to discipline or sack an employee that is deemed to be underperforming.

People like people - and people react better to people than they do to bluntly worded letters littered with ‘corporatese’.

This is a belief shared by Marc Bishop, Managing Director of PlusHR.

Writing in BusinessZone, he said: “It is important to get to the root cause of underperformance, rather than simply writing the employee off and dismissing staff as soon as they fail to deliver. Their underperformance might well be a result of apathy but, equally, there could be issues holding them back that could be easily resolved.”
