Snooping on an applicant's Facebook: Everything you need to know

When you have a handful, or more, of identical CVs in front of you and only the one role – it’s easy to log onto Mark Zuckerberg’s virtual baby and find out what they’re really like.

But, where do you stand on that? Harmless background research? Or cause for an employment tribunal?

Writing in City AM, Keely Rushmore, a Senior Associate at SA Law, advised recruiters on what is and isn’t legal when snooping on candidates on everyone’s favourite social media website.

“While a seemingly handy recruitment tool, pre-employment vetting needs to be used with caution,” she warns. “So, how should [one] approach the question of online digging in their recruitment process?”
