6 tips on working with a younger boss

The workforce is undergoing the integration of multiple age groups, with an ageing workforce and Millennials ready to make up 50% of the entire workforce by 2020. In view of this, it’s important that organisations are aware of the cultural impact this may have.

It may be the case that an older worker will find themselves managed by a younger boss – which could result in resentment.

Last year, a study in the Journal of Organizational Behavior found that in companies where the size of the age gap was larger between younger managers and older subordinates, employees tended to report more negative emotions, such as anger or fear.

The researchers, Florian Kunze and Jochen Menges, suggest that when these negative emotions are directly experienced by companies (if they reverberate through the organisation) performance is reduced.
