Industrious employees are what every organisation seeks; however, workers that go the extra mile may see their personal wellbeing and family responsibilities suffer.
According to research on employees in a UK customer call centre for a retail bank, conscientious staff reported feeling emotionally exhausted and found it hard to deal with work-family conflict.
The study, by the University of Bath and King’s College London, found the side effects of conscientiousness were more prominent amongst high performers. These employees faced sustaining high performance alongside extra tasks and responsibilities that managers were more likely to delegate to them due to their hard-working reputation.
Those surveyed reported that they felt emotionally drained and “used up” because of their work and struggled to maintain a work-life balance.
