How do you know if they’re listening? It’s a problem faced by everyone, not just those in HR. And the truth is that short of making your audience sit through a test, you don’t. That’s why the real question isn’t whether your audience is listening or not, but whether they’re engaged.
Be visual. Cut the clutter. As a writer it pains me to say this, but nobody wants to read anymore. Especially not if what they’re expected to read is dense, tough and (dare I say it) boring. A block of text is visually daunting. So why put people through it? After all, ninety percent of the information processed by the human brain is visual. And visuals are processed a lot faster than words, too - sixty thousand times faster, in fact. At simpleshow we strip your message down to its core and use simple illustrations and iconography to help tell a story. Because when it comes to explaining something, less is always more.
Engage your audience early. And I don’t mean by calling them up at 4am. Engagement starts in the recruitment process when potential candidates are weighing up whether they want to work for you, not once they’re tempted to work elsewhere! Whilst having a video for a job advertisement might seem a tad much, it’s a good way of getting new employees up to speed once they’ve been brought into the fold. And engaging your audience early applies just as much to the video content, too; with our attention spans now shorter than that of a goldfish, it’s imperative to hook people in within those first few seconds.
Make it relatable. That’s why a simpleshow starts by introducing a character. People like people! And more than that: they like people they can relate to. Few of your colleagues want to wade through swamps of text to find out how a new system or process is going to affect them. But bring out a memorable character – one who shares the same traits, responsibilities and challenges, no less – and hey presto: now they’re listening! Just keep it short, okay? As great as your message might be, nobody’s got time to watch Gone With the Wind anymore.Of course, you could just leave it to the experts. At simpleshow we produce videos that are short, simple and fun. Our unique approach to communicating delicate, complicated or mundane topics ensures that essential information is understood and, crucially, remembered. Why not get in touch, and see what we can explain for you?
