HR Grapevine 2015 Speakers - Kathryn Heywood, Director of HR Operations, TalkTalk

Kathryn Heywood, Director of HR Operations, TalkTalk, will be speaking at this year’s HR Can Change the World conference. She talks to HR Grapevine about her motivations and inspirations…

What have been the highlights in your career journey that have enabled you to sit where you are today?

I am proud to say that so far I have had a great career and love working in HR.  I was lucky enough to choose HR after leaving university and secured a graduate placement which was the start of my career.  Key highlights for me have been working in FMCG businesses which were IR/ER focussed giving me a great grounding and exposure to the ‘tougher side’ of HR.  I then moved across to telecommunications; equally as fast paced, where I have been for the last 9 years and along the way have helped to transform HR and the wider business.  A more recent career high has been leading the HR Technology transformation and introducing Workday HCM; helping to instigate our ‘digital switchover’.

What motivates and drives you?

I am motivated by being able to make a difference to individuals and the overall business.  I get energy from variety, being challenged in my job and having freedom within my role.  I enjoy leading teams; especially through transformation and working in a business that has confidence in HR and values the contribution we make.

How do you know when you’ve done a good job, what gives you satisfaction?

To know and feel I’ve done something well, to be recognised for that and to have been true to myself.  I get satisfaction from knowing that I have made a difference to individuals, the business and seeing the positive impact of my actions on others.

Who inspires you?

I’ve met many great people along my career journey, from previous bosses to colleagues where the common theme has been that they have believed in me and helped me to learn new things and develop myself.  I have 2 daughters who give me inspiration with their ‘can do’ attitude and loads of energy and enthusiasm for all that they do and this reminds me to apply this to what I do.  Two people stick out as inspirational to me, one of my early bosses at Northern Foods; Dermot Murphy and the CEO of TalkTalk Dido Harding; both have an engaging style and are visionary people.

Why does TalkTalk matter to you?

I believe in our DNA and our aspirations as a business.  I like the fast-paced, innovative, entrepreneurial culture where everyone can be themselves and enjoy the buzz I get from working here!
