Balancing work with caring responsibilities continues to be one of the most significant pressures facing working parents and carers in 2026.
ften described as the “silent load,” these largely invisible demands are still shaping who progresses, who stays, and who quietly steps back. And although the landscape has evolved since the pandemic, the weight of care continues to fall unevenly — particularly on women.
This year’s Modern Families Index (MFI) 2026 underscores how the pressures of care influence confidence, opportunity, and long‑term retention in ways employers can no longer afford to overlook.
Women and the unequal weight of the “silent load”
The data remains stark: women are still far more likely to see their careers disrupted by care. According to the MFI, they are 50% more likely than men to feel that becoming a parent harmed their career trajectory. Beyond childcare, women frequently absorb a greater share of support for ageing relatives and the ongoing administrative, emotional, and organisational labour that keeps family life functioning.
