'Effective & competent' | HR professional wins first court case using AI lawyer

AI legal technology in law

A freelance HR consultant has become the first person to win a court case in England with the support of an artificial intelligence law firm.

Tamires Camal Taquidir used Garfield, an AI-powered law firm, to pursue a debt owed by a hospitality business for HR-related consultancy work, recovering £7,000 in unpaid fees after spending around £400 on legal services.

The dispute arose after Taquidir carried out freelance HR work for the hospitality firm but was left unpaid. After unsuccessful attempts to recover the money directly, she turned to Garfield AI to prepare pre-action correspondence before issuing court proceedings.

According to the firm, its AI platform handled the legal work leading up to the trial, including drafting legal documents, preparing witness statements and assembling the trial bundle. Shortly before the hearing, Garfield instructed barrister Dominic Li of One Essex Court to represent the claimant in court.
