Keir Starmer has dramatically announced that he will resign as Prime Minister, paving the way for a leadership challenge and prompting experts to consider the impact that a change in PM could have on employment law.

Nominations for a new leader will begin in July, and a new leader of the party and the government will be in place by September, Starmer revealed on the steps of Downing Street.

Following Andy Burnham's victory in the Makerfield by-election, political commentators have widely speculated that he could emerge as the next PM. Such a development would be viewed by many as signalling a shift within the Labour Party and a move towards a more interventionist approach to employment regulation.

Lawyers at Constantine Law believe the government's ongoing consultation on zero-hours and agency worker reforms will provide the clearest indication yet of how a possible future Burnham administration would approach employment law and labour market regulation.
