Work, Reinvented: Defining the Human-AI Partnership

The future of work is built on a powerful human-AI partnership. Successful organisations are defining when and how to deploy talent and AI capabilities now.

AI is reshaping the world of work, and with that comes a lot of big questions. The conversations I’m having with CHROs are focused on the "how" of AI. How do we navigate transformational change and prepare our people for a different kind of work? On one hand, there's pressure to leverage AI for efficiency. On the other, we must keep people at the centre of everything we do.

The future of work isn't human or AI; it's a partnership between the two. AI should help us maximise our potential and focus on what we uniquely do best, surfacing insights we’d otherwise miss and sparking new ideas. Here are three considerations for leaders building this partnership.

Reinvesting in High-Value Work

AI is streamlining everything, from forecasting and quality checks to reducing thousands of hours of administrative tasks. The question is: What do we do with all this reclaimed
capacity?

We must redirect reclaimed capacity to core human capabilities: strategic innovation, high-impact relationships, and emotional intelligence. For example, by leveraging Workday Recruiter Agents, we reduced applicant screening volume by 18% and saved recruiters five hours weekly. With this extra time, they focus on higher-value work, such as facilitating effective interview debriefs to ensure higher-quality hiring decisions.

Defining Human-AI Boundaries

As AI becomes more integrated into our work, the line between what humans and agents can do is blurring.

Research shows most employees are comfortable with AI as a teammate, but not as a boss. Defining clear boundaries is essential. When you delineate the role of the agent—as task manager, collaborator, or advisor—you build trust and allow managers to focus entirely on leading their teams and driving performance.

Positioning AI as a Pathway for Growth

When the Internet started to become mainstream in the late ‘90s, it felt like the future we all could imagine was being replaced. AI is having a similar effect now. We’re still writing the guidebook about this new technology – testing its limits, understanding its impact, fine tuning its ability and defining its role.

Every time a new technology advances how we work, it transforms tasks into opportunities to learn and grow. We must foster a culture where employees have permission to experiment and treat AI as a learning partner. At Workday, our Everyday AI programme increased employee AI usage by four times our initial goal, with 80% of our workforce now adopting these tools.

  • High performers were 2x more likely to use AI, reinforcing the link between enablement and impact

  • AI adopters were 13% more likely to see a clear career path and 15% more likely to feel aligned to company strategy

High performers are twice as likely to use AI, reinforcing the link between enablement and impact. By positioning AI as a catalyst for growth, leaders build highly adaptable and resilient teams.

Building a New Partnership

In the coming years, agents will operate as critical partners that free humans for meaningful, high-value work. As leaders, we must design these partnerships thoughtfully to ensure AI enhances human potential. When we get this right, we tap into levels of possibility we didn't know existed.

As leaders, it’s up to us to design these partnerships thoughtfully, ensuring that every AI capability enhances, rather than replaces, human potential. When we get this part right, we don’t just create productivity, we tap new levels of potential we didn’t even know were possible.

Only 32% of leaders are confident their organisation has the skills needed for success. See how AI is transforming skills management in this report.
