360% | Payroll 'pressure' prompts surge in HMRC tip-offs about underpaying bosses

The number of employees blowing the whistle on their bosses for failing to pay the minimum wage is rising significantly, new data has revealed.

According to figures obtained by TWM Solicitors under the Freedom of Information Act, and shared with Sky, 7,622 tip-offs were made about underpayments last year.

It marks a 360% increase since 2020-21, when 1,656 reports were lodged.

The rise in underpayment whistleblowing

Of the 7,622 tip-offs made, HMRC launched 1,137 investigations last year – up from 911 in the year prior.
