Upgrading a giant - How the NHS transformed HR for 1.9 million

To create a new, easy-to-use portal that improves the overall user experience, the NHS embarked on a critical workforce platform overhaul...

Over a decade ago, a decision was made to enhance the user experience by integrating a new portal access point within ESR, the HR platform for the vast NHS workforce. It was not an easy call, but it was essential. Mike MacAuley, the General Manager from Liferay, tells HR Grapevine how they supported the project.

What was the process behind upgrading the NHS’ HR systems and what was the ultimate goal?

The project’s goal was to deliver a more modern, scalable and user-centric portal interface, responsive across devices, enhancing the user experience for the roughly 1.9 million staff across the NHS. The focus was on empowering staff and managers with intuitive digital tools, reducing friction in HR processes, and preparing the NHS workforce technology for future needs.

What did the new HR interface offer staff?

For staff across more than 300 NHS organisations, the new ESR portal was implemented to provide staff with a more user-friendly and convenient way to access essential HR and payroll services through self-service functionality. Employees can complete common tasks such as viewing pay slips, booking and requesting annual leave, and reviewing or updating personal details, all through a centralised access point. The solution also supports single sign-on for seamless access, works across devices through responsive design, and uses content targeting to ensure staff see information that is relevant to their role.
