Lloyd’s of London has opened a formal investigation into potential governance failings under its former chief executive, John Neal, following concerns about a 2023 promotion of a female executive who reported directly to him.
The investigation follows the withdrawal of Mr Neal’s planned appointment by AIG, which cited “personal circumstances” for the cancellation, yet reports suggest the move was prompted by Lloyd’s reopening a review of his conduct.
Background of the case
Mr Neal served as CEO of Lloyd’s of London from October 2018 until his departure in January 2025.
In July 2023, a newly created role of director of corporate affairs at Lloyd’s was filled by Rebekah Clement, who reported directly to Mr Neal. Insider sources subsequently raised concerns over whether the appointment had followed a competitive process, given perceived close personal ties between the two.
