'Best of both worlds' | Home working could help bring more people back into work, Lords report says

Home working could support the Government’s plans to get people back into work, by enabling people to work who might not otherwise be able to do so, according to a new Parliamentary report.

The study, Is working from home working?, was published today (November 13) by the House of Lords Home-based Working Committee.

Working from home has shifted firmly into the mainstream since the COVID-19 pandemic. The ONS estimates that 13% of working adults in Great Britain now work from home all the time, with another 26% doing so part of the week. The UK is thought to have some of the highest levels of home working in the world.

Key findings

The Committee investigated the current and future impact of remote and hybrid working across the UK. It found that hybrid arrangements can provide the “best of both worlds” when delivered well. However, access to home working is uneven, with higher levels among professionals, university graduates and people living in London.
